September 25, 2015 Bell Ringer

Bellringer

1. The climate of an area can be different from its weather. Which of the following statements describes the climate of an area?
A.            There should be heavy rains tomorrow morning.
B.            The rains next week are expected to cause some flooding.
C.            The average temperature from 1930-1996 was 23 degrees C (74 degrees F).
D.            The high temperature on September 4, 2009, was 32 degrees C (89 degrees F).
2. An offshore oil platform houses a drill for drilling oil. The drill descends from the platform and enters the ocean. At the bottom of the ocean, the drill starts to dig into the rock. It continues drilling into the rock for another 7,000 feet and then stops. Where does the drill stop?
A.            In the biosphere                             
B.            In the atmosphere
C.            In the geosphere            
D.            In the hydrosphere

Data Chat Journal Set Up

In order to complete your data chat, you must set your journal up like mine. I opened my journal to the last 5 pages and glued one copy of each item in my journal. The items that are glued in my journal are the same items that can be found on your desk. The items are listed below.

#1. White copy of my baseline data (If you do not have it yet, Miss. Gainous is still passing them out.)
#2. Blue copy of a bar graph so that I may track my data after each exam in we have in class.
#3. Yellow copy of the "My Science Data Chat" sheet which I will use to brainstorm  and organize ideas/strategies to help me reach my goals in science class.
#4. A colored book mark I can use to remind me where to find my data.

Steps to Set Up My Data Sheets
 #1. Open to the last 5 pages and on the first page glue my book mark down and label the page "My Data". Please do not spend too much time labeling your data cover.
 #2. Turn the page and glue down your baseline information on the right hand side of your journal.
#3.  Turn the page and take your "My Science Data Chat" form and glue it onto the left page. Fold it and quickly glue it in. There should be no cutting.

 #4. Paste your Bar Graph on the right side. Right across from your Data Chat form. Once you have completed these steps your journal is ready to go! :)

Feeling like you need some EXTRA CREDIT Opportunities?!

 

1. You must complete the incomplete work in your journal and have the grades changed in the grade book before you are allowed to complete extra credit.

2. For extra credit you may choose any topic on this website or in your journal and write a FULL page summary on what you know about the topic. You may use the internet, PENDA, or a friend for help.

3. Staple your extra credit into your journal on top of the topic that you chose. For example, write a full page summary on what causes moon phases and stable it on top of your moon phases diagram. 


Science Fun!! Earth, Sun, Moon Review

1. Seasons
The Earth is divided into two hemispheres, Northern and Southern. The Earth rotates/ spins on its axis. The Earth is tilted at a 23.5 degree angle. Due to the tilt of the Earth on its axis, the rays of sunlight hits the Earth at different angles. If one of the hemispheres is tilted toward the sun it will be Summer time, because it is getting DIRECT sunlight. For the hemisphere tilted away from the sun, it is winter time because it is getting INDIRECT sunlight. It takes the Earth 365.25 days to REVOLVE around the sun. 0.25 is the reason we need to have leap years.
 

2. Moon Phases
It is important to note that we see phases of the moon because we are looking at the Moon from the Earth. The Moon is REFLECTING light from the sunlight. We always see the same side of the moon. When the moon is waxing it is growing light on the RIGHT side of the moon. When the moon is waning it is growing light on the LEFT side of the moon. It takes the moon 29.5 days to orbit around the Earth.


3. Eclipses
During a Solar Eclipse the sunlight is being blocked by the moon. The planets are in a straight line, Sun, Moon and then Earth. The phase of the moon that Solar Eclipses happen in is during a New moon. During a Lunar Eclipse, the moon is in the Earths shadow so the Moon is being blocked. The phase of the moon that a Lunar Eclipse can happen in is during a Full Moon.




4. Tides
We experience tides due to the Moons gravitational pull on the Earth. Due to the moons location we experience more of a pull from the Moon than the Sun.

(If you have not completed your Earth's Sphere's foldable you will be given time at the end of class)

Paste it onto your journals RIGHT page.
